Frequently Asked Questions:
(About Counselling & How the Therapist Prefers to Work with You.)
How does treatment/counselling work?
The therapist likes to ask lots of questions designed to help you understand yourself and your situation better and to assist you to make choices that will help resolve problems. There are things the counsellor will suggest ideas or exercises.
Routinely the counsellor is likely to ask a client's preference before trying any exercises or activities that may help you.
Will I be embarrassed? Do I have to tell you things I don't want to talk about?
Sometimes you might find it hard to talk about things but you get to choose whether or not to do so. Just because the therpist asks questions does not me you have to provide information. It is up to you. It's your choice. If you would rather not discuss something just say "Hey I'm uncomfortable talking about that. Could we chat about this other thing I want to discuss instead?"
Will you make me do homework or anything outside of sessions?
Sometimes you might be asked to try something after you leave a session but it is up to you if you want to try it.
Is my information always confidential?
This counselling service is confidential although there are times when the counsellor will ask you to tell someone about things that have happened. The counsellor might need to ask your permission to speak to someone, or at times may inform you that it is required to tell someone:
• When you have evidence or suspicion of abuse of someone who is still a minor, a person who is disabled or aged.
• If the therapist is required to provide evidence for a court or other legal hearing.
• When in the therapist's professional opinion some harm could come to you or another person.
• When you mention that you witnessed or committed a serious crime or if the information may prevent a crime being committed.
• If insurance companies, Medicare/Medicare Local or doctors including the GP that wrote a Mental Healthcare Plan/referral require information regarding attendance, diagnosis, symptoms and a description of services rendered in order to process claims or revise care plans.
• When the counsellor may need to confidentially discuss your visits in professional/clinical supervision sessions with another practitioner in order to draw on additional experience or for professional development.
What happens to my records?
Records are filed for 7 years after your last session and are then securely destroyed.
